Khaleid

“Khaleid” is a mirror-clad roof in the shape of an eight-sided diamond, placed in the eastern part of Societetsparken in Varberg. Beneath the roof lies a soft compass rose where one can rest their head against the rose’s center. In many cultures, the octagon symbolizes the meeting of heaven and earth, the present and eternity. This is a work for rainy days and for moments when one wishes to be underneath, not on top. The reflective structure creates a sheltered space for contemplation. Subtle shifts in angle generate new patterns and unexpected perspectives. The triangular surfaces fragment the surroundings and redirect the gaze, like a hazy kaleidoscope or a spy mirror, where the observer also becomes the observed. The piece offers a refuge in public space, where openness and protection can coexist.

“Khaleid” was commissioned by the Municipality of Varberg for the public art festival Wallstreet 2025. The task was to transform an existing pocket park structure into a temporary public artwork, welcoming visitors day and night during the three summer months.

After dismantling, new proposals are now being considered for where the distorting diamond might reappear. It would be beautiful in a forest among tall trees. Suggestions are welcome — the piece can be reassembled for a new season!
